The Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is pleased to announce that Leanne Aldrich has been named the Town Ambassador of Oxford for the 19th Annual Komen Connecticut Race for the Cure, to be held on Sunday, June 2 in Bushnell Park in Hartford.
Aldrich, a breast cancer survivor, became a Town Ambassador to help raise awareness about the disease. “In addition to my own diagnosis, I know so many people affected by breast cancer, and I want to educate as many people as possible,” she said.
Connecticut has the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States, and it is estimated that more than 3,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the state this year.
Thousands of Connecticut residents from across the state will come together on June 2 to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrate breast cancer survivors and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease.
The 2011 Race for the Cure helped provide over $1 million in community grants to local organizations, making Komen Connecticut the largest non-government funder of breast cancer services in the state.
After local operating costs, 100 percent of funds donated to Komen Connecticut support local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in Connecticut and cutting-edge cancer research to find the causes and cures for breast cancer.
The role of the Town Ambassador is raise awareness about the disease and Komen Connecticut’s Race for the Cure. Town Ambassadors are responsible for distributing promotional and educational materials within their communities in hopes of educating fellow residents and raising funds to support breast cancer research and local education, screening and treatment.
“We live here. We Race here. We save lives here,” is more than a phrase to describe this year’s race, it is the motivation driving volunteers to get involved, recognizing Komen Connecticut’s critical support of local organizations that make a difference in women’s health throughout the state.
