The Oxford Historical Society’s Fourth Annual Peach Festival will be held Saturday, August 22, from 4 to7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church Hall.
This year’s special exhibit theme, “The Animals of Oxford,” will feature heritage photos of animals in town, as well as a special display of photos of current-day animals in Oxford.
The public is invited to submit photos of livestock, wildlife and pets to complete the display. Guests at the festival will be given ballots, to choose their favorite photos in each category.
Digital photos will be accepted via email at photos@oxford-historical-society.org.
Actual photos (4×6 preferred) may be left at the desk of the Oxford Public Library. They will be scanned at the library by Historical Society members, who will notify the photographers when they are done, so they may pick them up again at the library.
Persons submitting photos should include the name of the photographer and, if a youth, include their age, as well as an address (including email if available) and phone number for return of the photograph. Entries will be divided into classes of youth and adult.
Raffle Too
The Peach Festival also marks the kick-off of the Historical Society’s newest raffle.
Prizes include a hand-carved chestnut bowl donated by local artist Peter Petrochko, a hand tied, full sized homespun quilt crafted by the Homestead quilters, and a one hundred dollar gift certificate to Oxford’s 121 Restaurant and Bar.
Tickets are one dollar each and will be on sale at Historical Society events through November 20.
They may also be purchased by calling Nancy Farnum at (203) 888‑0230.
About the Peach Festival
The event highlights the Hale Peach Farm, an important part of the agricultural history of Oxford.
J.H. Hale was a successful orchard owner, whose Connecticut orchards led to the state once being the second largest producer of peaches, exceeded only by Georgia. Visitors at the Peach Festival will see photos of the orchards and learn of its history through photos and video clips.
In addition to the photo displays, there will be videos of the slides and interviews of older residents shown in the church sanctuary. There will be refreshments for sale, including Peach Cobbler and ice cream.
