Shelton police arrested a Sagamore Road man Saturday on a litany of charges after they said he assaulted and strangled a woman.
It was the second time police arrested the man, Robert O’Brien, since May on charges of assaulting the woman. Officers became involved in the case Saturday when the woman — who has a 3‑month-old child — called police saying she had gotten into a dispute that night with O’Brien.
The woman said O’Brien threatened to beat her up, after which she locked herself in a room and tried to call police, but O’Brien “kicked in the door, broke the phone, and began punching the victim in the head and body,” according to a press release from Shelton police.
O’Brien then strangled the woman, causing her to black out, according to police.
Eventually, she was able to get her baby and flee the home, after which she called police.
O’Brien left the home prior to officers arriving, but he was later located by Bridgeport police.
O’Brien, 31, was charged with violating a protective order, third-degree assault, interfering with an emergency call, second-degree threatening, second-degree strangulation, first-degree unlawful restraint, disorderly conduct, and risk of injury to a minor.
He was held in lieu of $250,000 to be arraigned Monday (July 23) at Superior Court in Derby.
Saturday’s incident came less than two months after a May dispute during which police said O’Brien strangled the woman and then fought with officers, who eventually had to use a police dog and Taser to take him into custody.
Police did not identify the relationship between the woman and O’Brien.
