DERBY – Detectives are still trying to track down the person or people responsible for opening fire on Hawkins Street on Feb. 21.
No arrests have been made.
“It’s an ongoing case, I don’t have much to report, but the detective bureau is working on it,” Derby Deputy Police Chief Brian Grogan told The Valley Indy on Feb. 28.
Police received a report of shots fired in the area of 109 Hawkins St. at about 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Police said about 16 shots were fired.
A residence and a few vehicles parked on the street were hit. No injuries were reported.
The incident happened on a densely populated road near a school bus stop.
While there were no kids at the stop when the shots were fired, a resident told The Valley Indy her child was out walking their dog during the incident.
Grogan characterized the incident as “isolated,” happening after a dispute.
The deputy chief said the shooter or shooters and the intended target all know each other, but the victim isn’t talking to police.
Derby police returned to the scene with a search warrant at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23.
“They were searching for evidence related to the incident,” Grogan said.
Grogan said initial reports saying police pursued a vehicle on Route 8 south were false.
However, Grogan said detectives seized a vehicle they believe is connected to the incident.
Grogan said detectives are still searching through videos to get a better idea of what happened and who might be responsible.
“They’re still pulling videos. No victims have come forward. No one’s really cooperating, so we don’t really have a clear picture of what truly happened,” he said.
Anyone with information on the incident should call Derby police at 203 735‑7811.
