Update, 10 p.m. — Fire Marshal Timm Willis said two residents suffered minor burns after an outside fire” extended to their home on Maiden Lane Tuesday.

The two people were treated and released by EMS at the scene.

Some 60 firefighters were sent to Maiden Lane, a road behind The Villa Bianca Inn off Roosevelt Drive at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The first calls reported it as a house fire. Units on scene discovered heavy fire outside and on the rear exterior of the Maiden Lane home. Some of the videos embedded in this story show what the scene was like as firefighters arrived.

Initial reports indicated two people were trapped, Willis said the people were outside the house as firefighters arrived. They suffered minor burns while trying to extinguish the flames.

We’re still on scene, but I can tell you two residents are displaced,” Willis said at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The Red Cross was contacted but not needed, as the residents were able to secure a hotel room.

The fire marshal will investigate the cause and origin of the fire. A brush fire extended up the steep, wooded hill behind the house.

Willis did not have much info Tuesday night, but said the fire started outside the house, then extended to the home. The fire got into the attic, Willis said. He said there was heavy fire, smoke and water damage.

Willis said more information might be released Wendesday morning.

Firefighters had to deal with heavy flames threatening exterior propane tanks at the rear of the house. The smell of propane hung heavy in the air after the fire in the house was put out.

Seymour fire police had the unenviable job of slowing vehicles down on Roosevelt Drive (Route 34) so that firefighters and EMS could safely access the scene.

The parking lot of The Villa Bianca Restaurant was being used as a staging ground.
