Shelton Finance Official Hires High Profile Lawyer

The former Shelton finance official the city has accused of stealing at least $348,616 from taxpayers has retained a lawyer.

William F. Dow III filed an appearance on behalf of the official, Sharon Scanlon, on Monday, according to court records.

Dow has handled a number of high-profile corruption cases in Connecticut. A biography on his firm’s website says his practice focuses on criminal and white collar defense in both state and federal courts.”

In 2009 he defended disgraced former Gov. John Rowland on corruption charges.

Dow also represented Shelton developer James Botti at federal trials in which Botti was accused of bribing city officials.

The jury deadlocked on most of the charges but convicted Botti of one count of honest services mail fraud. He is currently serving a six-year prison term and has appealed his sentence.

Reached Tuesday, Dow said he represents many clients.

Contrary to public perception, I handle both civil and criminal cases,” he said.

He declined to comment on the allegations against Scanlon.

I don’t discuss pending litigation,” he said.

The city this month filed 25 pages of documents at Superior Court in Milford accusing Scanlon of taking at least” $348,616 in part by depositing city checks into her personal accounts without authority.

The documents also say the city is about to commence a lawsuit against Scanlon and asks a judge to attach her Crescent Drive home to the case to secure the $348,616 allegedly taken.

A hearing on the matter has been scheduled for Sept. 24 at Superior Court in Milford.
