Smoke, But No Fire, In Downtown Shelton

ETHAN FRYFirefighters from Shelton and Derby responded to a report of a smoke condition” inside a Howe Avenue building Friday (March 15) afternoon, but found no fire.

Shelton Fire Department Chief Fran Jones said at the scene that the owner of Shelton Tattoo at 549 Howe Ave. reported smoke in a third-floor corridor at the building about 5:15 p.m.

The building has shops on the ground floor and apartments above.

We instituted a possible structure fire response because of the size of the building and the mixed use of the building,” Jones said.

Fortunately, firefighters couldn’t find any flames after checking all the apartments, the roof, and using thermal imaging cameras.

It’s unfounded where the smoke came from,” Jones said. It could have come from outside and wafted in.”

No injuries were reported. Crews were clearing the scene by about 5:40 p.m.
