Two Scholar-Athletes In Derby Honored

The Connecticut Association of Schools and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference has selected Derby High School seniors Joshua Dana and Nicole Rizzo for the 2018 Connecticut High School Scholar-Athlete Award.

The scholar-athlete program recognizes high school seniors with exemplary academic and athletic records. In addition, the Connecticut Association of Schools looks for students whose personal standards and achievements are a model for others.

Josh Dana has been on the Derby High School wrestling team for four years. He has earned a GPA of 3.83 and plans to attend the University of New Haven in the fall, majoring in criminal justice.

Nicole Rizzo has been on the Derby High School cross-country team for four years, and competes with the girls indoor and outdoor track teams. Nicole has earned all Naugatuck Valley League honors as a member of the cross-country team every year. She has earned a GPA of 4.33 and plans to attend Southern Connecticut State University in the fall majoring in psychology.

Both Josh and Nicole are outstanding student athletes and he is extremely proud of their accomplishments,” Derby High School Principal Martin Pascale said.

The scholar-athlete program annually recognizes two high school seniors – one boy and one girl – from each high school in the state.
