The Derby Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a fire at the former St. Michael’s School on Derby Avenue/Route 34.

Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief David Lenart said a basement fire was reported at about 12:15 a.m. Friday.

Lenart said Paugassett Hook & Ladder Company No. 4 were in the nearby fire house and were able to respond within a minute or two.

Firefirefighters extended a hose line to quickly extinguish the flames.

Lenart said the fire was in an entrance way to the building’s basement, but referred additional questions to the fire marshal.

A caretaker lives on the grounds, but there were no injuries, Lenart said.

Four Derby fire companies responded, along with Storm Ambulance and a fire crew from Shelton.
