Curfew Not Coming To Derby

An idea to enforce a curfew for young people in the Hawkins and Anson street areas did not come up for discussion during Wednesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting.

Ken Hughes, president of board, floated the idea earlier this month as city officials were dealing with a rash of violence on Hawkins Street.

Several television crews were on hand at Wednesday’s meeting, hoping for a curfew discussion.

The issue was raised briefly by residents the public comment portion at the start of the meeting.

Carl and Arlene Yacobacci spoke against the idea.

I have two teenagers myself. I would not want to see a curfew imposed for the entire town,” Arlene Yacobacci said.

Tom Lionetti said Derby needs a curfew.

I am in favor of the curfew. I think it’s a good thing Mr. Hughes brought up.”

The curfew issue did not come up during the monthly report from the police department — or at any other time during the meeting.

After the meeting, Mayor Anthony Staffieri said the city is still researching the idea.

Hughes, however, said he’s withdrawing the idea. A court ruling in Vernon, where a curfew was ruled unconstitutional, changed Hughes’ mind.

Risks are not worth the possible reward,” Hughes said Thursday.

The Aldermen did go public Wednesday with a quality of life task force, meant to address some of the underlying issues that could be contributing factors to crime in Derby.
