Clarence F. Doug” Douglass, 89, of Derby entered into rest on January 25, 2011. 

He was a lifelong resident of Derby. 

He was the beloved husband of the late Geraldine O’Connor. They were married 57 years. 

Clarence was born in Derby on Feb 16, 1921, a son of the late Clarence W. Douglass and Anna Schaeffer Douglass.

Clarence is survived by a sister, Frances Douglass Carey of Aurora, Colorado, a brother, Gordon of Oakland, Oregon, Joan Doohan, Linda McMonigle, George Budzinack and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers: Clayton, Donald, Kenneth, Wesley, Brendan, and a sister Leora Douglass Spring. 

Clarence joined the Army in 1939 and served his country proudly during World War II. Doug was fortunate to return home after completing five major battles, including a landing in Normandy on D‑Day, as well as fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was employed by the Southern New England Telephone Company and retired after 40 years of service.

Doug served Derby as the Fire Alarm Superintendent for more than 34 years, and was a member of the Storm Engine Company and Storm Ambulance Corps. 

Enlisting in the Army prior to completing High School, Doug received his diploma in June of 2005. He was one of the oldest graduates in Derby. 

Clarence was honored in April of 2006 by the French Government, being named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, for his contributions during World War II.

He was the Service Officer and Chaplain for the Derby VFW Post 10585 and was an active member of the American Legion Post 24 in Derby, as well as the Connecticut Chapter of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.” 

Clarence was very active and devoted to his work at St. Mary’s Church as the unofficial sexton and altar-server for several years. 

God, family, country” was his lifelong mantra.
