The old football coach inside Mayor Jim Della Volpe emerged Tuesday morning inside Eddy’s Bakeshop, where Valley Indy reporter Tony Spinelli participated in the annual Fat Tuesday paczki-eating contest.
Della Volpe, one of several Ansonia dignitaries on hand for the event, couldn’t help but trash talk the veteran Valley reporter.
Here is a list of Della Volpe’s taunts:
1. (Asking why Spinelli wasn’t in the shop, five minutes before the contest): “Where’s Spinelli? He’s supposed to be here. What, did he get scared?”
2. (During the contest): “Tony, you’re not out for a stroll.”
3. (To Valley Indy editor Eugene Driscoll): “How’s Spinelli doing, Gene?”
Driscoll: “Eh.”
Mayor: “It’s over.”
4. (Sounding exasperated) “Come on, Tony.”
5. “Quicker Tony, quicker!”
6. “Gene will give you the afternoon off!”
7. “How many does Tony got?”
Tony: “I got two and a half.”
Mayor: (Disapproving groan)
8. “Let’s go Tony, hurry up!”
9. “Come on, Tony.”
Tony (apparently delirious): “It’s quality, not quantity.”
Mayor: “You’re enjoying them!”
After the contest, Della Volpe told the Valley Indy he was disappointed with Spinelli’s performance and suggested Spinelli train more for next year’s event.
