Seymour Pink Asks Men To ‘Walk A Mile’ in High Heels

First Selectman Paul Roy and State Representative Theresa Conroy are asking local men to walk a mile in high heels to help raise money for breast cancer research.

The walk-a-thon is called Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” and is part of the town’s community effort to raise money for the cause.

The walk will take place on Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. starting at French Memorial Park. During the walk, male participants wearing 2‑inch high heels will walk along Route 67, ending at Hot Tamales.

There will be a lunch for participants held at the restaurant after the walk.

Roy said he is thrilled the idea is coming to fruition.

I think it is a great idea. It raises awareness among men,” he said. “[Walking in high heels] is a catchy gimmick to get people involved.”

ContributedThe walk is the latest event in the town’s breast cancer awareness efforts. Last year, a group called Seymour Pink” (a play on the words See More Pink) formed in order to host fundraising events for breast cancer research.

The group raised $10,000 at a golf tournament this summer, and another $6,700 at a pasta dinner last spring.

Last October, the entire town celebrated Seymour Pink” day, where local business owners and students at town schools wore pink and collected donations for the cause.

Roy said he hopes the walk will help attract even more donations.

I am excited about it. It could make good money for Seymour Pink,” Roy said. A lot of townspeople are behind the program.”

Roy has invited town leaders — including the Board of Education – to participate.

Board of Education member Yashu Putori announced the event at the board’s meeting last week.

Richard Belden, assistant superintendent for finance and operations, joked that high heels probably wouldn’t come in a size 13.

Men who want to participate without wearing the pumps can do so, but will not be eligible for prizes.

Registration fees of $25 include a T‑shirt and a meal ticket for a reception at Hot Tamales after the walk.
