SNAP Fitness Opens In Derby

Snap Fitness considers itself the Cheers” of the fitness industry, gym managers Stephanie Hartmayer and personal trainer Mary Schwartz said.

Everyone is welcome.

All ability levels here, not just the the ones wearing thongs and the muscle men,” Schwartz said.

The gym held a grand opening event on Wednesday.

Snap Fitness opened in the Wal-Mart plaza on Route 34 in Derby about four months ago, and has nearly 600 members, according to Laurie Luce, another gym manager. Luce, has 34 years in the fitness industry, and was the former owner of the Curves for Women franchise in Derby.

Owner John O’Rourke said the gym offers personal training, fitness classes, and 24-hour-a-day workout times.

We get a lot of shift workers, and then the local moms that want to work out when the kids are in school,” Hartmayer said about the various times of day that people like to work out.

There are 13 Snap Fitness centers in Connecticut, including the new Derby location.

Mayors Anthony Staffieri of Derby and Mark Lauretti of Shelton were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday.

I’m very encouraged with new businesses,” Staffieri said. It creates openings for other businesses to move in because there’s more foot traffic coming into the area.”

Snap is not the only new gym in Derby.

Edge Fitness recently announced it would open in the former Staples storefront on Route 34.
