Solar Company Says It Was ‘Sandbagged’ During Ansonia Application

Google Map shows the proposed location of solar panels on Ansonia’s “Hilltop” neighborhood.

ANSONIA — A company is redoubling its efforts to convince a state council to allow it to install about 6,000 solar panels on land off 31 Benz St.

The Connecticut Siting Council rejected the application on March 12. Click here for a previous Valley Indy story.

However, Windham Solar, LLC, a division of Allco Renewable Energy, LTD, based in New Haven, has filed new paperwork asking the council to reconsider the decision, according to information relayed by Ansonia Corporation Counsel John Marini during a meeting March 29.

The project’s purpose was to create an electric generating facility using solar power on about eight acres.

There had been some concern about this project not being the right fit for the residential neighborhood,” Marini said.

In a motion to vacate the council’s decision, Windham Solar describes the rejection as fundamentally flawed, unfair, factually inaccurate, and one that violates the company’s right to due process and equal protection.

One section of Windham’s motion simply reads: Windham was sandbagged.”

The statement is in reference to the council’s decision, which Windham says references issues, such as the impact on water quality, never raised during the council’s nine-month review of the project.

Windham asks the council’s decision be thrown out and that the matter be reconsidered.

Written comments on Windham’s motion will be accepted until April 9, according to this document.

Windham’s solar farm application was met with opposition by neighbors in the area and Mayor David Cassetti’s administration.

The city, as an intervening party, will have the opportunity to object, and will do so in writing,” Marini said. We’ll see what happens from there.”
