Robert James “Goat” Verner, 73, of Oxford, CT, passed away October 31st after a long battle with cancer. Robert is pre-deceased by his mother Margaret, father James, brothers Paul and Gary, and son Keith. Robert leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Colleen; five children: Michael, Eric, Daniel, Martin, and Nicole; and four grandchildren: Zach, Clara, Evry, and Charles.
Robert was a union dockworker for over 30 years with the ILA; an artist at the poker tables; and a loyal husband and father, who would never turn down his children for whatever they needed. A skilled third baseman, Robert took home the 1997 Southbury modified softball league championship alongside his teammates. R
obert also played bass for 60s rock band “The Electric Cornflakes” for dozens of fans. He was able to regale many with stories he forgot the ending to, and jokes he couldn’t remember the punchline for. Robert will be sorely missed, and leaves behind a legacy of hard work, easy laughs, and well-earned love. See you later, Goat — you’re God’s problem now.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday November 9th at 1pm at the Verner residence in Oxford.
