Roman Gebuza, age 73, of Shelton, beloved husband of the late Leonila Aquino Gebuza, died peacefully surrounded by his family on October 13, 2024 at the Waveny Life Care Center, New Canaan.
Born on September 21, 1951 in Malomice, Poland, he was the son of the late Szymon and Stefania Pisarczyk Gebuza. Together with his family, Mr. Gebuza immigrated from Poland in 1965 and settled in Shelton, where he was a longtime resident.
After graduating from Shelton High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, served as a combat engineer in the Vietnam War and continued his service as a career Marine for 20 years, until retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1991.
Mr. Gebuza earned numerous awards, ribbons and citations throughout his USMC career, while living on military bases throughout the world. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to his hometown of Shelton, where he would then find employment with MBI Inc. of Shelton, working in the shipping and receiving department until his retirement in 2016.
Most comfortable being at home, Mr. Gebuza enjoyed gardening, grilling and using his handyman skills to build a deck and gazebo among countless other home improvement projects. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church of Ansonia, the Russian — American Club of Shelton and a past member of the Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 of Shelton. Mr. Gebuza worked hard his whole life and did everything for his family. He was especially proud to see his children graduate from college. He will be long remembered for his special love for his family, especially for his four grandchildren.
Mr. Gebuza is survived by his devoted children, Lisa (Michael) Warycha of Norwalk, Illene (Matthew) Dmyterko of Cheshire, and Roman Gebuza, Jr. of Shelton; cherished grandchildren, Stephanie and Michael Warycha of Norwalk and Emilia and Maksym Dmyterko of Cheshire; sister, Maria (Andrew) Kowalczyk of Darien; brother, Myron Gebuza of New Canaan; niece, Janine (Pierangelo) Corticelli of Riverside; nephews, Paul (Danielle) Kowalczyk of Milford and Kevin (Kristina) Gebuza of CA; as well as several cousins and friends.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, (Panakhida at 6:30 PM) at the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from the Funeral Home at 9:00 AM.
A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 105 Clifton Avenue, Ansonia. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church Preservation Fund.
