U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is touring the Valley today to assess damage from Monday’s floods.

He made his first stop at Oxford Town Hall at about 10 a.m., where he met with town officials before heading out to the Housatonic River along Route 34 to see the damage for himself.

Water levels at the Stevenson Dam Monday reached the fifth highest since the National Weather Service started recording. The river crested at 21.68 feet at about 2:15 p.m. Monday.

The early morning passed without major flooding along the Housatonic River.

The river, which submerged 25 homes in Oxford alone Monday, was at 13.5 feet at 5:30 a.m. Friday. The flood stage is 11 feet.

It is expected to rise to 15.4 feet by 7 a.m. Saturday.

That’s still below Monday’s high of 21.6 feet, which was the highest point the river reached since 1984.

It is still too early to estimate damage from Monday’s flooding of the Housatonic River — but more rain is predicted for Thursday and Friday, said Fire Chief Scott Pelletier.

Pelletier is also the director of emergency management for the town. The video shows flooding from Monday along Route 34.

It’s going to be a slow process. We have to get ready and see what Thursday’s weather will do to us,” Pelletier said of the weather forecast.

The Housatonic River exceeded its flood stage by 10 feet Monday, causing extensive and dangerous flooding along the river in Oxford, Shelton, Seymour and Derby.

The water hit its highest level since 1984.

This is very bad. A lot of people in town said they’ve never seen it so bad. We’ve had some cars float away and they’re probably somewhere in the Seymour-Derby area,” said Oxford police Sgt. Dan Semosky.

Shelton Couple Still Waiting On FEMA Grant

Water seeping into Karen Hanson and Clay Winters’ home in Shelton early Monday soaked their hardwood floors, kitchen cabinets and living room furniture.

It would have been their basement or garage, had a long-anticipated federal check arrived in time.

Hanson and Winters are waiting to receive a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant that would help pay to raise their home above the floodplain — making their first floor a basement or garage instead of their main living space.
