Mayor James T. Della Volpe informed the citizens of Ansonia today that the city has lost one of its most active citizens who also served as its seventeenth mayor:

“I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lester Hale, 86, who died on Friday at Shady Knoll in Seymour, just yards from the place of his birth and childhood.

Jane and I spent some moments with Lester on Thursday night after his sons Gary and Kevin informed me that the end was near. We will miss his quiet kindness, wry humor and his enduring good character.

Les was a dear friend, wonderful guy and devoted public servant. He served his country with great distinction as a nose-gunner on a B-24 Heavy Bomber in World War II, participating in an incredible 50 missions including many treacherous runs; as a volunteer member of the Charters Hose Company for 57 years; as a member and president of our Board of Aldermen in the 1960’s; and as our Mayor from 1967 through 1969.

He instilled public service in his sons and in countless young people who admired his decency, great sense of humor and gentle kindness. Ansonia will honor him in the way that is appropriate for such a distinguished former Mayor and decorated World War II veteran.

May God rest his soul.”
