A 54-year old Seymour man was badly hurt after being hit by a car on Route 67 in front of Webster Bank Friday.
The man’s name was not released. He had serious injuries, according to a statement from police, and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The accident happened at 6:43 p.m.
The man was pushing a grocery cart while walking on Route 67, police said. He was hit as he tried to cross the road.
“Investigators are looking into the lighting in the area, the clothing the pedestrian was wearing or if the narrowing of the roadways due to accumulated ice and snow played a role in the accident,” Seymour Police Deputy Chief Paul Satkowski said.
A 63-year-old Seymour man was driving the vehicle that struck the man.
The driver’s name was not released.
“The operator of the vehicle was not injured but was visibly shaken by the incident,” police said.
Police said the victim often used the cart to help him walk and to carry personal items. Although his name was not released, readers on the Valley Indy Facebook page said he is often seen traversing Seymour with the cart. They sent prayers and well wishes to the man.
Police did not say whether any tickets or any other enforcement action was taken.
The accident is under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to call 203-881-7600.

I know the victim. HE LIVES in Fallview Apts Bldg “B” and lives independently (Aging in Place). He routinely exercises his right to be mobile and uses a market cart as an assistive device. Because he is unable to lift his legs to climb up a curb, he is unable to travel on sidewalks from his home to grocery, banking, and other. Absence of curbcuts, absence of crosswalks, broken sidewalks, snow on sidewalks that should have been removed by Ordinance 14-6 are reasons he is forced like me too to travel in streets. Seymour’s failure to have developed as a Livable Community 25 years after ADA’s enactment is partly responsible for this “accident.”

Joe, I am so saddened to hear this news. nnnnn told me the other day, and nnnnn said you told her too. I think about you, nnnnn and others getting around safely in downtown Seymour, and this is my worst fear. How easy is it to get hit. I’m sick about seniors being forced to park in the trestle tavern lot, the fishing ladder municipal lot and the Strand lot when more senior housing will be built on Columbus Street. It is utterly absurd and cruel to even fathom more senior housing downtown and risking injury due to negligence of property owners and those passing this nonsense. What’s the answer???
