DERBY — Over the past three days, more than a dozen members of the Storm Ambulance & Rescue Corps, joined by firefighters from Bridgeport, Stamford, Wallingford, Shelton, and Somers, participated in a specialized technical rescue course focused on the Arizona Vortex system. The training was conducted by instructors from the Connecticut Fire Academy, led by Chief James Kenney.

The Arizona Vortex is a highly versatile, multi-role rescue tripod system designed for high- and low-angle rope rescue operations. Its adaptable configuration allows rescuers to create stable anchor points in challenging environments such as cliffs, trenches, confined spaces, and industrial structures. The equipment is an essential tool for departments performing complex technical rescues where traditional anchor points are unavailable or unsafe.

Training sessions were held at multiple locations throughout the City of Derby, allowing participants to practice on a variety of terrains and real-world conditions. Members learned advanced setup techniques, patient packaging, and rigging applications using the Vortex in both single and twin-tension rope systems.

“The Storm Ambulance & Rescue Corps is responsible for rope rescue operations within the City of Derby,” said Chief Tom Lenart, Sr. “It’s great that we were able to bring this level of specialized training to our city, and even better that we could partner with other departments to create a diverse group of learners and instructors. This type of inter-departmental collaboration only strengthens our collective response capabilities.”

Special thanks are extended to Dennis O’Connell from the Derby Parks and Recreation Department for his assistance and support throughout the weekend.
