ANSONIA — City officials will raise a flag in honor of Juneteenth in a ceremony scheduled for 12 p.m. June 19 at Veterans Memorial Park, next to city hall (253 Main St).

The ceremony will feature local speakers, a performance from the Macedonia Baptist Church choir, and the raising of the Juneteenth flag, according to a flyer on the city’s on Facebook page.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The date is the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger marched into Galveston Bay, Tex., and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people throughout Texas, the westernmost Confederate state, were free.

The day has been recognized as a federal holiday since 2021.

The Juneteenth flag includes the colors of the American flag and contains two stars — the center star to symbolize Texas, where the announcement happened, and the outer star to mark the spread of freedom throughout the United States, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
