Joseph R. VanHoose, age 86, of Shelton, entered into rest on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the West Haven VA Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Marilyn (Zawadski) VanHoose. Joseph was born in Paintsville, KY, on January 24, 1940, son of the late Raymond and Lurray (Blanton) VanHoose, and he lived in Shelton for over 25 years, coming from Bridgeport.
Joseph bravely served his country with the US Army during the Vietnam War, and he had a long career in practice as an Optician. He was an avid golfer and was featured in Sports Illustrated. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family.
He is the beloved father of Jeff VanHoose and his wife Kim, and cherished grandfather of Eric and Evan VanHoose and Ella, Logan, and Noah VanHoose. He is also survived by a brother, Edward VanHoose, a sister, Janet VanHoose, and several nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by a beloved son, Joseph VanHoose, Jr., and a brother, George VanHoose.
Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. A memorial service, with Full Military Honors, will begin in the parlor at 5:30 PM.
