ANSONIA – A federal grand jury indicted a 49-year-old city man on drug and gun charges Aug. 12.
The defendant, Irvin Javier Villegas, was first arrested in April after Bridgeport police charged him with criminal possession of a firearm, operating a drug factory, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and other related charges.
Police raided Villegas’ residence on Silver Hill Road in Ansonia and allegedly found 1.2 kilograms of cocaine, 400 grams of heroin, and a Glock handgun.
The raid happened after law enforcement made two undercover purchases of heroin and fentanyl from Villagas, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Villegas is a convicted felon who served more than a year in prison after being convicted of first-degree robbery in March 2000.
His criminal background left him exposed to federal charges. The grand jury returned an indictment charging Villegas with possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin and 500 grams or more of cocaine. He was also charged with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Villegas pleaded not guilty to the charges Aug. 24. He was released on a $250,000 bond.
Jury selection in the case has been scheduled for October in Hartford federal court.
