Jean-Paul “Gus” Garceau, age 81, of Shelton, entered into rest peacefully at Griffin Hospital, Derby on August 23, 2026. He is the beloved husband of 57 years to Rosemarie Tonucci Garceau. Jean-Paul was born on December 12, 1944 and raised in Putman, CT, son of the late Charles and Alice Garceau.
After earning an Electrical Engineering degree from what was known as Thames Valley State Technical College in Norwich, CT, he started his career with SNET in New Haven, CT. After two short periods away with the Air Force Reserve and IBM, Jean-Paul returned to SNET as a Systems Programmer / Analyst. Upon returning to SNET, Jean-Paul met the “love of his life” Rosemarie. Initially Jean-Paul and Rosemarie lived in the hilltop section of Ansonia but moved to Shelton in 1975. He took early retirement from SBC / AT&T in 1999. Golf was his main activity in retirement. He also volunteered at Griffin Hospital for many years, serving as Ambassador, golf cart driver and baker at the Cancer Center. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and woodworking.
Jean-Paul was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his son Paul Garceau of Texas, daughter Jennifer Dame of New Hampshire, grandson Milo Garceau, his two brothers Robert Garceau (Merrilyn) and Philip Garceau (Gail), his sister AnnMarie Moulin (Roland), his beloved sister-in-law Cynthia Tonucci, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving brother-in-law, CT State Representative Vincent J. Tonucci.
Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton on Thursday, August 27, from 4 PM to 7 PM. On Friday everyone is invited to go directly to St. Joseph Church, 50 Fairmont Pl. Shelton, for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM.
Burial will follow at Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, Derby. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Gateway Community College Foundation.
