SEYMOUR – The Seymour fire marshal said a house fire Sunday started in the basement, but the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
According to Seymour Fire Marshal Timm Willis, firefighters received a call at 4:32 a.m. Jan. 25 reporting a house fire at 26 Deerfield Drive. About 30 responding firefighters from Seymour and Oxford battled the blaze in a subzero wind chill, Willis said.
“The house was destroyed,” Willis said.
The fire displaced five members of the Nuñez family.
Johnny Nuñez sustained smoke inhalation injuries after making trips back into the house to rescue the family’s pets and was hospitalized, according to a GoFundMe organized to support the family.

Jessica Nuñez, one of the displaced residents, thanked the community for its support in a message to The Valley Indy. She said she’s keeping her head high.
“We appreciate all of the support from the community. It’s been pretty incredible,” Nuñez said.
A winter storm rolled into Seymour after the fire was knocked down. Investigators from the fire marshal’s office carried out their work amid the storm, which dumped about a foot of snow across town throughout the day.
The house at 26 Deerfield Drive was a 2,632-square foot wood frame, single-family home, according to Seymour land records. It was constructed in 1963.
