Baby Boy From Derby In Critical Condition

A truck from the state police major case squad.

Updated story.

A 3‑month-old baby boy from Derby is in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest Friday.

Emergency responders were sent to a house on Hawthorne Avenue near the intersection of Cedric Avenue just before noon.

The baby was rushed to Griffin Hospital, stabilized, then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven.

Derby police called in the state police major crime squad, which remained at the property into the night.

However, the heavy police presence does not necessarily mean a crime occurred, Lt. Justin Stanko said.

The state police investigators were brought in to process the scene.

It’s similar to a car wreck where there is serious injury. Law enforcement protocol calls for an accident reconstruction team to be brought in when the injuries are life threatening.

In the Hawthorne Avenue case, it’s considered a medical call, with police assisting.

Right now our purpose is to determine what caused this cardiac event,” Stanko said. In situations like this, the scene is secured and processed to assist medical personnel in determining what caused this medical event.”

The family has not been identified.
