Bridgeport Man Charged With Robbing Seymour Bank

A 53-year-old Bridgeport man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly robbing a Webster Bank in Seymour in February.

The man, Thomas Steele, was charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree larceny. He’s being held on a $200,000 bond.

Steele allegedly walked into Webster Bank at 15 New Haven Road on Saturday, Feb. 16, took out a handgun and ordered everyone in the bank to the ground.

He then jumped over the teller’s counter and filled a shopping bag with about $5,000 cash, according to police.

He left out a back entrance and got into a getaway car waiting for him on Spruce Street. An accomplice drove the vehicle onto Route 8 north, where they avoided detection.

Approximately two days later the suspect vehicle was located in the City of Milford by an observant patrol officer during normal routine patrol assignments,” according to a prepared statement from police.

Police gathered enough evidence to get an arrest warrant for Steele.

Investigators were also able to collect a significant amount of evidence, conduct interviews, secure and serve several search and seizure warrants and review video surveillance footage identifying Steele as the person responsible for the bank robbery,” Seymour police said in a statement.

Steele was apprehended by members of a Hamden and Milford Police Task Force early Tuesday morning.

He was then arraigned Tuesday at Superior Court in Derby.

Seymour Police detectives are also investigating another bank robbery which happened at the same bank on April 9.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Seymour Police Department Detective Division at 203 – 881-7638.

Steele is due back in court June 19.
