Derby Big Y To Open In November, City Official Says

DERBY — The new Big Y at 656 New Haven Ave. is expected to open Nov. 3, the city’s building official said during a meeting Tuesday. NOTE: Big Y sent out mailers that arrived in Derby saying grand opening is Nov. 7.

The official, Carlo Sarmiento, said he and Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks conducted a final inspection of the new store earlier in the day Tuesday. A final certificate of occupancy is expected to be issued this week.

Sarmiento said a temporary certificate of occupancy had already been issued so that the store could start stocking the shelves.

It’s going to take them about 30 days to stock all the shelves,” he said.

Sarmiento made his remarks at a Derby Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday.

Big Y opening in Derby is important to the shopping center, which has been without an anchor tenant since Walmart closed in 2016. City officials have not said what’s going in where the former Adams supermarket was next to the old Walmart.

But Derby’s gain in Ansonia’s loss, as the Big Y on Main Street is winding down to make way for the new store in Derby. There’s no word on what will replace Big Y. Company officials said workers there have been offered jobs at the new Derby store or another Big Y in the area.
