Derby Fire Commissioner Michael Kelleher is conducting an internal investigation to determine how a Polaris utility vehicle owned by the fire department was involved in a rollover crash on Derby Avenue Monday.

The crash is unusual because the vehicle was not going to a call, and it is not clear whether the people in the vehicle were authorized to be operating it.

One man, whose name has not been released, suffered a hand injury in the crash. The Valley Indy was told the two people in the utility vehicle were from Ansonia, and are brothers.

Kelleher said he was scheduled to talk to witnesses Wednesday evening.

He said there was little he could say about the incident since he was still trying to gather information.

A report will be prepared, Kelleher said.

The fire commissioner, referring to a police report, said the person driving the vehicle was an Ansonia firefighter.

The Polaris belongs to Paugassett Hook and Ladder Company #4, a Derby Fire Department Company.

On Tuesday, Derby police confirmed they were investigating the crash. They said they responded to a reported rollover on Derby Avenue near Mount Pleasant Street on Memorial Day about 3:30 p.m.

One person was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and the other person in the vehicle was not injured.

Police are asking anyone with information to call (203) 735‑7811 Ext. 319.
