Surrounding towns have been investigating a series of evening residential burglaries where the suspect(s) knock at the front door and, if there is no answer, forcefully enter through the rear of the house.
A common ruse is that the suspects will pose as solicitors should the resident actually answer the door.

Day-to-day solicitors are required to pay a fee to the city and must check in with the police department.
Annual solicitors are subject to the same requirements but also receive a written permit showing the City of Derby along with their name.
Failing to register is a violation of local ordinance and is subject to a fine.
