Police: Sleepy Driver Caused Derby Crash

A 20-year-old Ansonia man may have fallen asleep at the wheel, which caused a head-on crash on Roosevelt Drive March 6.

Police said Max Godfrey was driving a 2002 Dodge Durango east near Lakeview Terrace when he crossed over into oncoming traffic and crashed into a 2003 GMC Sierra being driven by 47-year-old John Marlin of Shelton.

According to an accident report from Derby police, Godfrey told cops he was feeling tired” and may have dozed off,” just before the crash.

Godfrey received a ticket for failing to stay in the proper lane, according to the police report.

A motorist in a vehicle behind Marlin also told police that Godfrey crossed the center lane and struck Marlin’s vehicle head on. The police report concludes Godfrey caused the wreck.

The crash was reported about 3:30 p.m.

Marlin was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition the day after the crash.

Updated information on Godfrey’s condition wasn’t available.

The crash happened within a stretch of Roosevelt Drive that sees lots of serious wrecks.

Three people have died on that stretch of Roosevelt Drive since 2010.

The fatal wrecks prompted a meeting in late 2012 between representatives from the Department of Transportation, the Valley Council of Governments and Derby police to discuss the road’s safety.
