McCullough

ANSONIA-DERBY — A 29-year-old man shot in the leg by a police officer on Division Street Monday morning was arrested on weapons charges, according to state police.

Corneilus McCullough, of Atwater Avenue in Derby, was charged with illegal possession of a handgun and carrying a pistol without a permit. He is due in Bridgeport Court Tuesday morning.

According to local police, McCullough, along with another male who was not identified, walked up to a Derby police car at about 7 a.m. that was at a traffic light at the intersection of Division Street and Clifton Avenue. The men allegedly told the officer they were being chased. Seconds later McCullough then allegedly took out a handgun and shot at a passing car, hitting it several times but injuring no one.

The Derby officer shot McCullough in the leg.

Police haven’t said whether the passing car was actually chasing the two men. The car was stopped by police down the road. Click here for a previous Valley Indy story.

The investigation is ongoing. More charges are likely.

State police are in charge of investigating the Derby police officer’s use of force.

State police described McCullough as being listed on the state’s Deadly Weapon Offender Registry.” That list includes people who have been accused of a crime using a deadly weapon; but were found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, according to the state police website.
