Do YOU want to live in a city without a library?
The mayor’s proposed budget for the 2017 – 2018 year eliminates the entire full-time staff and effectively closes the Ansonia Library. The possibility that this could happen is upsetting at the very least, but in reality, it is devastating to the future of our city.

Ansonia Schools Superintendent Carol Merlone sent the following letter on behalf of the Board of Education Friday morning. Click here to read a previous story with some background.
Dear Residents of Ansonia:
Unfortunately, as you are already aware, a solicitation letter titled “Go the Extra Mile For Ansonia Schools” was included in your annual tax bill. Neither the Board of Education nor the Superintendent ever reviewed the letter or gave the City of Ansonia or its representatives the permission to send this letter out.

Ansonia’s school board finalized a $31,260,484 budget Wednesday that will result in four layoffs.
A total of 9 positions were eliminated districtwide, school officials said, but employees in many of them were reassigned to other jobs that were open due to attrition.
Meanwhile school sports — which school administrators had said were on the chopping block — will be funded fully after Mayor David Cassetti promised about $200,000 more to the school system than what was allocated by Aldermen last week.

Ansonia Aldermen on Tuesday passed a $64,128,369 budget for next year that will decrease taxes slightly and provide an increase of about $1 million for the city’s schools.
The 8 – 4 vote came after a public hearing during which an overwhelming majority of speakers asked the Aldermen to give the schools more money than the $750,000 increase envisioned in a “tentative” budget approved last week.
But the school board had requested a $2 million increase, and said Monday athletic programs could be eliminated.
School leaders said after Tuesday’s meeting cuts of some kind will still hit the district.
An Ansonia Aldermen’s meeting Tuesday to set the city’s budget for next year will take place at the high school, not City Hall as originally scheduled.
Ansonia school district leaders said they will be forced to cut sports and lay off teachers if the city budget is adopted as is.
“I hate to do this, but we are going to have to eliminate our sports program,” Ansonia Schools Superintendent Carol Merlone said.
Merlone and Assistant Superintendent Michael Wilson made the announcement regarding athletics Monday during an interview on “Navel Gazing,” the Valley Indy’s podcast.

Ansonia Aldermen Thursday voted 7 – 4 to set a “tentative” $63,897,275 budget for next year that would lower taxes slightly.
The spending plan will be the subject of a public hearing — and then, possible changes — at a meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday (May 24).
Teachers, administrators and parents Thursday urged the Aldermen to allocate more money for Ansonia schools, saying veteran school leaders are leaving the district at an alarming rate and that the budget as is will do heavy damage to the city’s school system.

Six years ago, I volunteered at my daughter, Medina’s, kindergarten class at Prendergast Elementary School. I had the honor and privilege of meeting her dedicated and hardworking teacher, Mrs. Pozucek, who went above and beyond in her role as a teacher.
During recess time, I was getting to know some of the teachers and staff and learned that so many of our teachers, who owe astronomical amounts on their students loans, were doing so much to financially support our children out of their own pockets.
