Ansonia’s budget debate officially went into overtime Thursday.
The city’s charter calls on Aldermen to have a spending plan — and a tax rate — in place for next year by the end of April.
Instead, they met Thursday and voted to “recess” the meeting until May 24, by which time they hope to have agreed on a plan to save money on insurance with the Board of Education.

Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti accused three Aldermen of boycotting a committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday to look at possible changes to the way the city funds its employee health insurance to save money.
Ansonia school officials spent about an hour Thursday (March 31) telling a committee of Aldermen that they need a nearly 7 percent increase in funding next year to avoid drastic cuts to staff and programs.
At the end of the meeting, the committee’s chairman, Second Ward Alderman Lorie Vaccaro, said that if they could, Aldermen would allocate a 10 percent increase for the school district.

Mayor David Cassetti has said publicly on numerous occasions that he supports a great education for Ansonia’s students. Unfortunately, his recent statements contradict his previous public comments.
Ansonia’s tax board will begin its review of the city’s 2016 – 2017 budget this week with a view to passing the spending plan to the Board of Aldermen by March 7.
Last week Mayor David Cassetti proposed a budget that, if passed, would raise city spending about $652,820, or about 1 percent, but lower the mill rate from 37.52 to 37.19, about 0.9 percent.

Ansonia’s Board of Education voted Wednesday to request a budget increase of just over $2 million from the city.
After the meeting, school board President William Nimons said the budget, as-is, would probably cut 6 to 8 positions in the school district next year. He said he hopes to avoid layoffs through attrition.
