The Ansonia Board of Apportionment and Taxation approved a $59.2 million city budget for 2011 – 2012 Monday night.
The budget raises the tax rate by half a mill, from 25.75 mills to 26.25 mills.
That means a taxpayer with a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $100 more in property taxes next year.

Ansonia officials barred members of the public and three reporters from attending two “workshops” about the city’s proposed budget Monday.
The bizarre action flies in the face of the Freedom of Information Act, state FOI experts said Tuesday.
Ansonia officials erred by first holding the impromptu tax board “workshops” — and then messed up again by not allowing the public into the proceedings, experts agreed.

Residents will get to weigh in on the city’s $59.07 million budget proposal at a public hearing at 7 p.m. tonight (May 9) at City Hall.
Then the Board of Apportionment and Taxation will possibly revise the proposal and will take a final vote on the spending plan at a meeting May 16.
The proposal represents a half mill increase in the tax rate, from the current 25.75 mills to 26.25 mills.

The Board of Education isn’t in as bad a financial situation this year as originally suspected.
At a meeting last month, School Business Administrator James Gaskins had predicted a budget deficit of about $142,000 for 2010 – 2011.
On Wednesday, Gaskins said the updated projection is only $5,000.

The Board of Aldermen passed its $58.9 million budget proposal to the city’s tax board this week with a challenge: Try to whittle the 2.2 percent increase down to zero.
The preliminary 2011 – 2012 budget proposal represents a $1.25 million, or 2.2 percent increase in spending over the current year.
If approved as is, it would mean a tax rate increase of less than a mill — from 25.75 to 26.67 mills.

The Ansonia Board of Education has asked the city for a 3.49 percent increase for its budget in 2011 – 2012.
The Board of Education voted this week to pass along the $26.9 million request to the city. The budget proposal is $911,000 more than the current year’s budget.
The main drivers of the requested increase are from contract obligations and health insurance costs, according to Superintendent Carol Merlone.

The Ansonia tax board has promised to review a revised budget proposal from Senior Center Director Maureen Bennett.
Chairman Richard Sturges told a crowd of senior citizens that much at the Board of Apportionment and Taxation meeting Monday night.
But it’s still not clear if the senior center will receive more money for the upcoming fiscal year — something Bennett and several senior citizens that attend the center regularly have requested of the tax board.
