With all the attention surrounding the Board of Apportionment and Taxation continuing to fight to, in the state of Connecticut’s words, illegally take away $600,000 from the Ansonia Board of Education, it seems that the few residents that are on BOAT’s side have been fed misinformation.

Accountability is the theme of budget season in Ansonia this year. That’s why I am encouraged to see commenter Brian Perkins calling for a reconciliation of the Board of Education budget. I would add to that a recommendation for a full, independent audit of what amounts to not only the largest city department, but one of the largest employers in New Haven County.
The Ansonia Aldermen’s finance committee is scheduled to hold a budget workshop Tuesday (May 22) at 6:30 p.m.
The agenda for the meeting says the committee will be discussing the 2018 – 2019 budget in the Erlingheuser Room on the second floor of City Hall, 253 Main St.

As the saying goes, history has a tendency to repeat itself. The events taking place right now encapsulate this proverb to a tee.
Almost exactly two years ago, I spoke against the tax cut that would leave the Ansonia School District under budget. I expressed great concern that our schools would lose incredibly passionate and adroit educators, and unfortunately, that has started to happen.

Ansonia residents, students, and educators had been ripping a $600,000 cut to the school district’s budget for more than 45 minutes at the Armory Thursday when First Ward Alderman Phil Tripp took the floor and promptly upped the ante.

Ansonia’s Board of Education has filed a lawsuit asking a judge to prevent the city from taking $600,000 from the school board’s budget for 2017 – 2018.
A marshal served city officials with the lawsuit Wednesday (May 16) afternoon, ending weeks of debate among Board of Education members about whether or not to sue the city over a vote by Aldermen in January to cut the school district’s budget in the middle of the year.
Ansonia’s school board has set a new deadline in its threat to sue the city over a $600,000 cut in its current budget.
In a letter dated Thursday, the school board’s lawyer, Frederick Dorsey, says the city has until May 15 to restore the $600,000 cut or the school board will file a lawsuit.
The Ansonia Board of Education is threatening to file a lawsuit against the city for taking $600,000 out of the school budget in January.
The school board, acting on the advice of its attorney, is arguing the move didn’t follow the proper procedures outlined in state law.
But Mayor David Cassetti’s administration maintains the money taken away from the schools properly, and that the move was part of an agreement between the city and the school district last year.
