With all the attention surrounding the Board of Apportionment and Taxation continuing to fight to, in the state of Connecticut’s words, illegally take away $600,000 from the Ansonia Board of Education, it seems that the few residents that are on BOATs side have been fed misinformation.

Letter: Information, Not Litigation, Will Solve Ansonia Budget Problem

Accountability is the theme of budget season in Ansonia this year. That’s why I am encouraged to see commenter Brian Perkins calling for a reconciliation of the Board of Education budget. I would add to that a recommendation for a full, independent audit of what amounts to not only the largest city department, but one of the largest employers in New Haven County.

As the saying goes, history has a tendency to repeat itself. The events taking place right now encapsulate this proverb to a tee.

Almost exactly two years ago, I spoke against the tax cut that would leave the Ansonia School District under budget. I expressed great concern that our schools would lose incredibly passionate and adroit educators, and unfortunately, that has started to happen.

Ansonia Board of Education President William Nimons talks to Frederick Dorsey, the school board’s lawyer, during a February 2018 meeting.

Ansonia’s Board of Education has filed a lawsuit asking a judge to prevent the city from taking $600,000 from the school board’s budget for 2017 – 2018.

Christopher Phipps, a member of Ansonia’s Board of Education, talks to Lorie Vaccaro, the President of the Board of Aldermen, after a meeting May 14.

Ansonia Aldermen and school officials clearly disagree about a $600,000 cut made by the Aldermen to the school district’s budget in January.

But leaders from both sides hoped a lawsuit over the issue could be averted before a Tuesday (May 15) deadline set by the school board’s lawyer.

Ansonia School Board Threatens Lawsuit In Funding Dispute

Ansonia Board of Education President William Nimons (right) talks after an April 3 meeting.

The Ansonia Board of Education is threatening to file a lawsuit against the city for taking $600,000 out of the school budget in January.

The school board, acting on the advice of its attorney, is arguing the move didn’t follow the proper procedures outlined in state law.

But Mayor David Cassetti’s administration maintains the money taken away from the schools properly, and that the move was part of an agreement between the city and the school district last year.
