Mayor Lauretti Proposes Slight Tax Decrease In Shelton

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti presented a $123,331,031 budget proposal for 2017 – 2018 that would result in a slight tax decrease if adopted as-is.

But during an 11-minute speech to the tax board and the city’s Aldermen the mayor warned that uncertainty over aid from the state could result in major changes before the spending plan is finalized in May.

Taxes Stay The Same In Shelton

FILEThe Shelton Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Thursday to approve a city budget for 2016 – 17 that board President John Anglace said makes everyone in town happy, and everyone in surrounding towns envious.

The $122,384,654 budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 includes a spending increase of $162,138 over the current year’s budget and no change in the tax rate, which will remain at 22.31 mills.

Lauretti Budget Proposal: No Change To Shelton’s Tax Rate

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti presented a $122,355,476 budget proposal for 2016 – 2017 Tuesday (March 22) he said would see property taxes remain flat year-over-year.

The proposal now goes to the city’s Board of Apportionment and Taxation, which will hold a series of workshops in the coming weeks. That board will then deliver a recommendation to the city’s Aldermen, who have final say on the budget.

Shelton Has A Budget, But Confusion Reigns Over Full-Day Kindergarten

Shelton Aldermen on Thursday passed a $118.1 million budget for 2014 – 2015 that will result in an unchanged tax rate.

A majority of Aldermen said the spending plan would give the city’s schools enough funding to implement full-day kindergarten — discussion of which has dominated this year’s budget discussions — but two board members who voted against the proposal disagreed, and after the meeting school officials said the program couldn’t be implemented with the numbers passed Thursday.

Lauretti’s Budget Carries No Tax Increase; Schools Say No Money For Full-Day K

Photo:Eugene DriscollShelton Mayor Mark Lauretti presented a $117,945,680 budget proposal for 2014 – 2015 Friday (March 21) he said would see property taxes remain flat year-over-year.

The mayor’s proposal, which will now be reviewed by the city’s tax board and Aldermen, would see the Board of Education receive $67,600,000, about $1.5 million less than the school board requested.

Board of Education Chairman Mark Holden said after Lauretti’s speech that the mayor’s proposal would not be enough to implement full-day kindergarten in the school district, and might even result in layoffs.

Lauretti said school officials say the same thing every year.”

Lauretti Proposes Slight Tax Decrease In Shelton

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti presented a $115,492,006 budget request for 2013 – 2014 Thursday (March 21) that he said would reduce property taxes by .1 mill.

In a speech dotted with digs at the state and federal governments, Lauretti said that Shelton has broken from the norm,” with city spending to remain flat overall despite a proposed $1.6 million hike in school spending.

Though the Board of Education had requested about $1.4 million more than the figure Lauretti proposed, school officials said after the speech that the mayor’s number was workable due mostly to cost savings the district will see from converting to a fleet of city-owned, propane-fueled buses.

$115.5 Million Budget Approved In Shelton

The Shelton Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved a $115.5 million budget that sets the city’s tax rate at 22.4 mills in 2012 – 2013.

That means a homeowner with property assessed at $250,000 will see a tax bill of $5,600.

Mayor Mark Lauretti predicted most homeowners would see lower tax bills than last year, as a result of property revaluation.
