If the Board of Education doesn’t receive an increase in its budget for 2011 – 2012, about 35 jobs could be in jeopardy.
That was a worst-case scenario floated by Superintendent Freeman Burr Thursday evening during his first presentation of the school budget proposal.
Burr presented two budget scenarios to the Board of Education finance committee. The finance committee did not vote on either proposal, and instead asked Burr to rework some items before presenting the plan to the full board next week.

Two weeks after the Board of Aldermen approved a $63.1 million budget for the Shelton school district, the Board of Education Thursday discussed the effects of the budget.
While the approved spending plan represents a $95,000 increase over current spending, school officials had requested $66.5 million in order to meet all their financial obligations.
With the approved budget, about 140 jobs will be eliminated.

How badly do town leaders want a ‘Yes’ vote on the proposed $49.4 million budget?
They opened town hall on Friday — when it’s usually closed — to host a press conference in order to get the message out.
“We implore the taxpayers to exercise their democratic right and vote this Tuesday on the budget,” Board of Finance chairman Mark Thompson told a small group of reporters Friday afternoon.

The Board of Aldermen will have a lot of public input to digest May 6 when it resumes deliberations on the city’s proposed $110.09 million budget.
And most of that input deals with precisely the scheduled topic for discussion — education spending.
Hundreds of people attended a public hearing on the budget proposal Tuesday night at Shelton Intermediate School. Several dozen spoke about their position on the budget proposal.

Shelton parents continued to push for more money in the school budget Thursday — overwhelming the public comment session before the Board of Aldermen meeting with pleas for more funding in the 2010 – 2011 budget.
