Ansonia Mayor Spars With Alderman Over $5,000 Raise

ANSONIA — A $5,000 raise given by Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti to a land use official who began working for the city last year prompted some heated discussion at an Aldermen’s meeting Tuesday.

During a back-and-forth with Cassetti, Third Ward Alderman Joseph Jeanette Jr. accused the mayor of making an end run around the Aldermen in granting the pay bump.

Why do we need our Aldermen here if you’re just going to give raises without even consulting us?” Jeanette said.

Parole Granted For Shelton Official Convicted Of Embezzlement

Sharon Scanlon, 51, left York Correctional Institution in Niantic Jan. 16, roughly 24 months into 54-month prison sentence handed down by a judge at Superior Court in Milford two years earlier, after she pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny and first-degree forgery.

Derby Emails Shed No Light On Senior Center Situation

Emails between Mayor Anita Dugatto’s office and senior center director Sarah Muoio show no conflict between the pair in the weeks leading up to Muoio’s dismissal.

Dugatto fired Muoio Jan. 21. The mayor was criticized at the time because Muoio was mourning the death of her father, and Dugatto would not explain her decision.

Derby Government Huddles Over WPCA Issues

A bevy of elected and appointed government officials went behind closed doors last week to discuss legal expenses connected to an order from state environmental regulators.

State law allows government officials to meet in nonpublic executive sessions” in certain situations, such as when government officials are talking about legal strategy, or negotiations involving lawsuits.

But bills, including legal fees, are usually discussed in public, because it is the public’s money.

Derby Mayor Requests Police Probe Of Former Senior Center Director

DERBY — Derby Mayor Anita Dugatto broke her silence Monday on her decision to fire the city’s director — by calling the police.

The mayor filed a complaint asserting financial irregularities by former Derby Senior Center Director Sarah Muoio,” according to a statement from Derby police.

No dollar figures attached to the city’s allegation were made public.

Derby Mayor Remains Silent On Employee’s Dismissal

The former Derby senior center director’s personnel file shows no disciplinary problems, and the mayor who fired her remains silent as to what triggered the move.

Mayor Anita Dugatto took the unusual step last month of firing Sarah Muoio just before her father’s funeral. Muoio did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Early Ansonia School Budget Asks For Steep Increase In Funding

The Ansonia Board of Education’s finance committee voted Jan. 13 to seek an increase of 7.7 percent from the city to fund the school district in 2016 – 2017.

That’s a year-to-year increase of about $2.3 million.

Will they get it?

Absolutely, positively not,” Mayor David Cassetti said.

Derby Sunday Morning Meeting Called Into Question

Unearthed Memo: Ansonia Tax Office Reduced Interest For Some In 2011-2012

If you are late paying local property taxes, state law says you must be hit with interest penalties.

But that did not happen in Ansonia for at least 100 taxpayers in fiscal year 2011. 

And now the city’s corporation counsel is recommending a special audit to determine whether the city lost out on even more money.
