DERBY — A 4.8 magnitude earthquake originating in New Jersey on Friday morning was felt in the Valley.
The earthquake’s epicenter about five miles north of Whitehouse Station in New Jersey. It could be felt throughout the tri-state area, including as far as Hartford in Connecticut.
There was no damage reported locally.
The shaking lasted for about four to six seconds, and was similar to when a low-flying helicopter passes overhead, or when a jackhammer is used outside a home.
Seymour First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis issued a Code Red robocall explaining the vibrations were from the Jersey earthquake, and not rock-blasting from the Haynes quarry off Route 8.
Ansonia and Derby schools sent messages to parents saying all was OK within the school buildings.
The earthquake was reported at 10:23 a.m. April 5, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
SEYMOUR – While rain blanketed the Naugatuck Valley on Wednesday (April 3), forecasts show clear skies for Monday’s upcoming total solar eclipse – and, for Seymour and Oxford students, an early school day.
Seymour announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday that schools will be releasing students early on Monday. The post cites safety concerns, noting that looking at the sun can cause permanent eye damage when viewed without special equipment – especially during an eclipse, when looking at the sun is at its most tempting.
“A commitment to the safety and well-being of our students and staff drives our decision,” Superintendent Susan Compton wrote in the post. “The decision to send students and staff home early will safeguard their well-being and provide a chance to experience this rare celestial event with their families, should they choose to do so, under safe viewing conditions.”
DERBY — Fire Marshal David Marcarelli sent along the following information:
Fifteen people were killed in fires in the first two months of 2024 in Connecticut, making it the deadliest start to the year in at least a decade, according to data from the state fire officials. Most deadly fires happen where people live, and there are generally more fires in the winter, when people spend more time indoors and turn on the heat. However, smoking, cooking, and burning candles are among the top causes of unintentional fires.
