Ansonia police shot and killed a pitbull that killed a Yorkshire Terrier on High Street Saturday.
Police responded to the area of 94 – 96 High Street on a report of a disturbance, according to a press release issued Monday.
Witnesses told police a man and woman were walking the Yorkshire Terrier on High Street, when a pitbull ran out of a house at 96 High Street, and onto the sidewalk.
The dog grabbed the Yorkshire Terrier in its mouth, police said.
Police officers arrived to find a man trying to restrain a brown pitbull, which still had the smaller dog clenched in its mouth.
The officer fired a Taser at the pitbull, which ran away after being shocked. But then the pitbull ran back toward the officer, the press release said.
“The officer then determined that he had to shoot the pitbull for the safety of himself and other people in the area,” the police press release states.
Police took the pitbull to a veterinarian, but it died on the way there, according to the press release. The Yorkshire Terrier did not survive the attack.
Police said they are waiting for more information from the owners of the pitbull. The case remains open.
