ANSONIA – Ansonia police said that alcohol may have been involved in a crash on Oct. 7 that set a car ablaze and required the driver to be hospitalized.
A car veered off-road on East Main Street near the intersection with Kingston Drive on Monday evening, according to footage provided by police. It then crashed into several parked cars, and the car caught fire.
A resident at a nearby apartment complex leapt in and rescued the driver from the burning vehicle. The driver was then transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police. There were no other injuries.
On Thursday (Oct. 9), police provided additional video footage of the accident and said that speed and alcohol were both likely factors in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing. Police said an arrest is expected.
“The accident serves as a reminder that speed and driving under the influence can have devastating consequences,” Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a prepared statement. “The Ansonia Police Department would like to remind all drivers to drive safely, obey the speed limit and not drive under the influence.”
