Ansonia Shooting Victim Not Helping Police

Police are investigating a mid-day shooting that occurred in downtown Ansonia on Saturday.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, was shot in the stomach, and is recovering at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Police have few details about the shooting — which was reported by Griffin Hospital when the man came in seeking help at about 2:23 p.m. Dec. 11.

The Ansonia police department didn’t receive any other report of a shooting during that time period, according to Lt. Andrew Cota, police spokesperson.

The victim told police he was walking on Main Street, near Maple Avenue, when a heavy-set black male approached him and shot him in the stomach, Cota said.

The victim did not give any more information to the officer and was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for his injury. Cota said the victim has not cooperated with police in subsequent interviews.

The detective division is investigating. There were some witnesses in the area Saturday, who said they saw a group of four or five men in the area at the time of the shooting. The men were last seen leaving in two separate dark colored SUVs, Cota said in a press release.

The victim’s injuries were not life threatening, Cota said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Ansonia Police at (203) 735‑1885.
