Bed Bug Sighting At LoPresti School

A bedbug was found in Anna LoPresti School on Dec. 20. It’s the third such incident in a year.

LoPresti principal David S. Olechna sent a letter home to parents on Dec. 21, notifying them of the find.

The school contacted a pest control company, which inspected the school Tuesday afternoon and positively identified the insect as a bed bug, according to his letter.

We did not send a letter home yesterday because we wanted to be sure of our facts,” Olechna said in the letter.

LoPresti Bed Bug Letter

A team of bed-bug sniffing dogs couldn’t find any other bed bugs, the school said in a second letter sent to parents Thursday.

Bed bug sightings were reported at the school in March 2011 and last December.

Each time, the school had a pest control company investigate.

They determined that the school was not infested and the bug likely came in on a student’s bag.

Olechna said a thorough search was conducted over the Thanksgiving break as well — and they again found no signs of infestation.

Jim Rafferty, whose daughter is in first grade at LoPresti, said he was concerned about the third bed bug sighting.

The first time, incidents happen. I understand that. The second time, there might be a problem,” Rafferty said. The third time, that’s a strike out in my book. There’s definitely a problem.”

Olechna, in the second letter, reminded parents to be compassionate, and said any parent who had concerns about their children’s items is welcome to bring in a seal-able plastic bin to keep their backpack and belongings in.

The second letter is posted below.
