DERBY — St. Michael’s Catholic War Veterans Post 1562 is sponsoring a Cigar & Bourbon Tasting on Friday, Oct. 4 from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Post Hall, 112 Derby Ave., as part of its grassroots campaign to support veterans and first responders in Connecticut.
Tickets are $40 per person and include cigar, food, raffles, and a variety of bourbons to try. The bourbon brands available include Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Angel’s Envy and Basil Hayden. Other drink specials also will be available. All funds raised will remain in Connecticut to help those here.
Post Commander Tom Voytek said the event will be the final fundraiser of a monthlong initiative, TargetCTforT2T, to raise funds for a future veterans home in Connecticut. For this initiative, the Post has teamed up with the national Tunnel to Towers (T2T) organization, established after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
“T2T has a track record of supporting military veterans and first responders, including building homes for the homeless in those groups, and paying off mortgages of these fallen heroes,” Voytek said. “You might say this is the grand finale of our grassroots campaign this month.”
The campaign launched on Sept. 1, coinciding with the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 this year. Post veteran and auxiliary members have hosted raffles, bingos, a tag & bake sale, and conducted door-to-door engagement with local organizations and businesses to invite communities across the region to join together in the cause. Among the businesses offering gift cards for raffle prizes are Amici’s, Fuego, Porky’s, KFC, and Uptown Eatery. Other businesses who are accepting donations by way of donation jars at their establishments are Apollo Pizza, Copper City Restaurant, Twisted Vine, and Relish, among others.
“The Post members have been working hard for months to create a lineup of fun and engaging ways for the community of towns across the region, around the state, to support veterans and first responders now and in the future. It’s our social activities that bring us together, forge common bonds and friendships. That’s the way to ultimately do good in our communities,” Voytek said.
