DERBY – The Connecticut Education Association (CEA) recently honored Derby Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway for his collaborative relationship with educators and his efforts to improve teaching in Connecticut.
The CEA is the state’s largest association of public school teachers.
Conway was awarded the CEA’s “Excellence in Education Advocacy Award” at a ceremony held on Sept. 27 in New Haven during a fundraiser for the Connecticut Education Foundation. Click here for more info.
“This distinction recognizes Dr. Conway’s commitment to his school community and the premium he places on teacher autonomy and respect for the profession,” Kate Dias, CEA president, said in a prepared statement.
The CEA said Conway was honored for his “collaborative relationship with educators as well as his work on the Governor’s Teacher and Recruitment Task Force and Connecticut Advisory Council for Teaching and Professional Standards.”
Conway has been Derby’s superintendent since 2012. He’s been involved in education for 35 years, and is a former state legislator.
He is a past president of both the South Central Connecticut Area Superintendents Association and the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents.
“The CEA is excited to congratulate Dr. Conway on receiving the Excellence in Education Advocacy Award,” said Alicia Olenoski, president of the Derby Education Association (the local teachers’ union). “His leadership is defined by his unwavering support, active listening, and collaborative spirit. Dr. Conway consistently works alongside our teachers to find effective solutions, making him an invaluable partner in advancing education.”
A prepared statement from the school district including high praise for Conway from Derby school board chairman Jim Gildea and Derby Mayor Joseph DiMartino.
“This recognition is a reflection of his unwavering commitment, visionary leadership, and relentless dedication to enhancing the quality of our schools,” the mayor said.
Conway said he was honored to be noticed by the organization and thanked the Derby community for their support.
“This recognition is a reflection of the dedicated educators, staff, and community members I have the privilege to work alongside every day. Together, we have built a collaborative and supportive environment, ensuring that our students and teachers thrive. I remain committed to advocating for our educators and fostering a school community where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. I thank the CEA, the Derby Board of Education, and all who support our mission to provide the best education possible for our students,” Conway said in a statement.
