Corporate Cup Is Up And Running

If you work in the Valley, it’s time to get fit and possibly win a prize while doing it.

The Griffin Hospital Community Corporate Cup, sponsored by the hospital and presented by Valley United Way, Valley YMCA and Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce began Monday.

The Corporate Cup is a series of competitive events that encourages Valley business employees to improve their lifestyles, health and fitness.

Bill Powanda, vice president of Griffin Hospital, said that the event was originally started by Griffin Hospital with the Valley United Way to encourage individuals not prone to join competitive sports to get more active.

It was intended to bring together companies in the community in a fun and social setting and, at the same time, engage members of the community in recreational events not extreme in athletic requirements,” Powanda said.

Companies can register online at the Valley United Way’s Web site.

The Corporate Cup started in 1991. Jack Walsh, president of Valley United Way, said that he expects several companies to return this year. Walsh said that PerkinElmer, Birmingham Group Health Service, United Illuminating and BIC have already registered.

Walsh, a former basketball coach, is planning to run in the 5K race, which is scheduled for June 9.

It’s a great community event with a serious focus on improving health and lifestyle,“ Walsh said. It’s also a great opportunity to improve your health and have fun at the same time.“

Events during the Corporate Cup include: Stress reduction classes, bowling, darts, orienteering, mini golf, wiffle ball, horseshoes, bocce ball and a breakfast, lunch and dinner that focuses on health.

Also, there will be discussions on snoring, advances in cancer care, chronic knee and hip pain along with fireside chats on integrative medicine. At the end of the Corporate Cup, an award reception will be held at Griffin Hospital.

The Healthy Team competition is the highlight of the Corporate Cup. It encourages co-workers to team up to earn points through exercise, diet, health education, and to stop smoking. All Healthy Team participants receive a free membership to the Valley YMCA for the duration of the event.

Information and registration can be found at www.valleyunitedway.org or by contacting Walsh at 203 – 926-9478.
