Sunnyside School in Shelton celebrated Read Across America with a visit from Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro on Friday (March 9). She spoke about the importance of reading and stressed that reading is the key to success in life. DeLauro involved the students in the audience by asking them to share the name of their favorite book.
DeLauro also read the story “Mama Provi and the Pot of Rice.” She asked some students to share their favorite part of the book. At the end of the assembly, Mr. Michael Cooper, our art teacher, and students presented Rosa with a “Cat in the Hat” card and flowers.
In addition, DeLauro recognized first-grade students who participated in an at-home reading program called “Rosa’s Readers.”
The program is designed specifically for first-grade students to increase their interest in reading. Each child was asked to read at least 20 books over a period of time. Students were also encouraged to create a bookmark that promotes the importance of reading. Students who successfully completed the program will be invited to a group recognition ceremony in the spring.
Principal Darlene Tickey said she enjoyed hosting DeLauro.
“Sunnyside School was proud to welcome Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro on Friday as she read a wonderful book about generosity and helping others to our students,” Tickey said. “As I walked with Congresswoman DeLauro down our hallways, she was thrilled with our school’s artwork, students’ writing samples and our teachers’ vibrant classrooms. It was a pleasure to have our very own congresswoman here, and the students are still asking when their friend Rosa will return again!”
