DemBoyz Wins 2010 Valley ASA Sectional Championship

The DemBoyz Softball Club, sponsored by Norwood A.C./ Lanza Restaurant of Ansonia, earned the 2010 Valley ASA Sectional Championship by sweeping through four straight games this past weekend.

DemBoyz downed fellow league member Slovak Club 9 – 2 in the finals to secure the tourney crown.

After trading zeros with Slovak Club in the first inning, DemBoyz went ahead 1 – 0 on Pete Silva’s rbi second inning single before Marc Mercier delivered a two run double in the third to boost the lead to 3 – 0.

Still on top 6 – 2 after six, DemBoyz wrapped up the win and the championship with a three run seventh.

Winning pitcher Ben Schwartz and Mercier sparked the victors at the plate with three base hits each. Pete Silva, John LaRovera and Tyrone Maynard garnered a pair apiece.

Schwartz, backed by a solid defensive effort, limited Slovak to 7 hits including two by Ed Picirillo.

After opening their tourney run with a mercy rule defeat of the CDW All Stars from Shelton, DemBoyz bested Lusitano’s 7 – 2.

A five run first inning, highlighted by a Mercier two rbi single, and a two run second gave DemBoyz all the scoring they would need.

Fran McNellis, LaRovera and Silva each had a pair of hits to lead the winning offense.

Silva at shortstop earned defensive plaudits by engineering a pair of inning ending double plays.

A nine run second inning propelled DemBoyz on to a 14 – 3 triumph over Slovak in the winners’ bracket finals.

The teams exchanged a pair of first inning runs before Norwood/ Lanza went on their second stanza spree. Joe Cavanaugh capped off the eruption with a three run inside the park home run.

Will Abbott and McNellis banged out three hits apiece to pace the winning attack. Chris King, Pat Lynch and LaRovera added two base knocks each. DemBoyz outscored their opponents 44 ‑10 in the four game sweep to earn the Valley’s number one seed in next week’s State Championship Tournament at the North Branford Sportsplex. The Slovak Club finished second, Lusitano’s softball third, Downtown Danny O’s fourth, Jeremiah’s fifth and The Drafthouse/ Shelton PD sixth.
